Causes of Teacher’s Ineffectivenes

By understanding the law of cause and effect we shall be able to stop the effect if we can make away with the cause of an action. I had firsthand experience with classroom teachers as a trainer and researcher in the area of teaching and learning for over a decade as a result I can gather the following as the causes of teachers’ ineffectiveness:

1. Poor educational background/a product of an ineffective teacher: A school shouldn’t exist if the school can’t produce the expected educational product. The number one ingredient of a quality education is a quality teacher. To have a virtuous cycle of quality education products we must positioned at the starting point a quality teacher. What goes around comes around. Give me a quality teacher and I shall make a quality student and in return make a quality teacher and vice versa. This is the beginning of the success of the Quality Assurance Policy in Education (QAPE).

2. Inadequate Knowledge of the Personality and the Role of a Teacher. Take this example, the personality and role of a detergent is to “fragmentize” and remove stains from clothes. Anyone who goes to the market or shop to buy a detergent, already knows what purpose it serves. As a teacher, you are the lifeblood of the society’s tradition, culture, norms, values, intellectualism, and morality. The key to the future of mankind and our nation lies in the hands of the teachers.

3. Poor or lack of understanding of the Philosophy of Education and Education Policy could rob the teacher of effectiveness. Ordinarily, when you see teachers who are enmeshed in examination misconduct they are the category of teachers with poor understanding of the philosophy of education.

4. Political manipulation of education by using an education position to compensate someone who doesn’t merit an educational leadership position puts education at a disadvantage and the teaching profession in jeopardy.

5. Government failure to fully implement a policy that could promote teachers’ effectiveness during the cause of teachers’ education training.

6. Lack of Review of Teachers’ Training Curriculum to meet up with the contemporary issues that could enrich teaching profession modules for training the curriculum needs to be reviewed to accommodate contemporary issues.

7. Poor Supervision of Teaching Practice Students and Teachers in active teaching.

8. Lack of Mentoring Guide Programme for the Beginning Teachers.

9. Any product of examination malpractice cannot be an effective teacher in a real classroom situation. To have and sustain the effectiveness of teachers we must eradicate examination misconduct out of the school system.

10. Abuse of the Government Deregulation Policy on Education: The Deregulation policy on education has been abused owing to people who don’t possess the required educational qualifications opening schools and getting approval from the government. They hired teachers whom they do not know and have the qualifications to supervise the teacher’s work. Whether he does well or not the owner of the school can’t tell.

  1. Teacher’s hostile attitude to change and personal improvement.
  2. Poor remuneration and inadequate teacher’s welfare.
